Things to Do During Your Christmas Visit

Beyond holiday events, there's still so much you can enjoy on the Outer Banks during the Christmas season!

Fishing in Winter

Don’t pack away your gear just because summer’s ended! Winter is an excellent time for surf fishing along the northern shores and Hatteras Island. Cooler waters bring in species like striped bass and red drum, and with fewer people around, you’ll certainly up your chances of hooking the big one.

Monuments and Museums

The quieter pace of the holiday season also makes it easier to explore the area’s historic landmarks. The Wright Brothers National Memorial, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and Jockey’s Ridge State Park are all more relaxed this time of year, giving you time to take in the scenery and the stories behind these sites. Over on Roanoke Island, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum offers a fascinating look at shipwrecks, maritime culture, and the seafaring history that defines the Outer Banks.

Wildlife and Natural Sights

December is also a great month to see some local wildlife. Birdwatchers can spot migrating species like harlequin ducks and majestic herons passing through the area, especially around Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. On calmer days, you might also catch sight of dolphins offshore as you relax on the balcony of your vacation home. At night, take time to look up at the winter sky. The colder, drier air reduces haze, making the stars shine brighter than at any other time of the year.
